Richard Perez
Hey there, I’m Richard Perez and i’m an illustrator / designer hailing from the foggy coast of San Francisco. Got my BFA in 2008 from Academy of Art here in SF and been freestyle freelancing since then! Love making silkscreen posters, prints and other self-initiated projects when not tackling client work.
.
Whats behind the name Skinny Ships – its cool?
Skinny Ships came from an old sketchbook doodle from my freshman year in design school, i had drawn a parody of the famous Loose Lips Sink Ships poster from WW2. It stuck for some reason.
Best film ever set in San Francisco?
Probably Coppola’s The Conversation or the 70’s version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. But the best worst has to be The Room with its multiple establishing shots of the Golden Gate Bridge. OMG, that film is so bad.
Favourite bar and favourite drink?
Don’t do too much bar hopping these days, but use to love this place Zeitgeist here in SF. Drink of choice either Blue Moon or Newcastle. Tasty!
Obamas healthcare reforms – what you reckon?
As one of the many un-insured Americans i’m all for Obama’s health care reform policy, and yes to the public option! We need something to keep those big insurance companies from gouging the American public and turning down so many people cause of pre-existing conditions.
Which recording artist would you most like to create artwork for?
Hard to say, if time travel is a possibility probably Talking Heads. Also would love to work with a label like Warp or Stones Throw, whose releases always have a strong design sense.
Hows your working method – freehand drawing or computer?
A combination of both, really l like making clean simple geometric illustrations on the computer, but its also fun to bust out markers and doodling and drawing stuff out on paper too. Or combining the two whenever possible.
