Montreal is the second largest primarily French speaking city in the world. Have you ever been to France or would you like to go?
Travelling is one of those things I truly couldn’t get enough in this life, and I tend to do it as much as I can since they make me grow so much. I’ve been to Paris for the first time for a 3 day trip only while going back from Egypt. I didn’t like it that much, because I found most people I encountered really stressed out and kind of rude. I didn’t want to stay on that negative impression, so I went back for a month to Paris last Spring and I really loved it, especially the Montorgueil area, which is lovely with its cafes and boutiques. I’d like to see more of France soon, like go to Toulouse or Marseille. My sister went there and people were speaking in English to her because they thought French wasn’t her first language since the accent is so different between France and Quebec!
Would you rather drink tea with Queen Elizabeth II or have a beer with Stephen Harper?
I would like the opportunity to tell both how I disagree with the fact that they are “ruling” my country. I think it’s a true shame that a country like Canada isn’t even independant yet, and I think it’s even a bigger shame that most Canadian voted for the Conservatory party, who only want to send us backward instead of leading us forward toward a more environmental, human and peaceful country.
Have you ever done logrolling – it looks crazy?
Haha no! This must be one of the craziest tradition in the world, maybe along with this thing they do in Spain where they let loose a wild bull in the streets and people try to not get killed by it!
Your work has a kind of European feel to it – who inspires you?
My favorite artists are, in no particular order, Yokoland, Franz Ackermann, Ian Stevenson, Chris Johanson, David Shrigley, Team Macho, Luke Best and Mike Perry. They are all geniuses.
How has your work developed – did you study art or are you self taught?
I studied visual arts in University here in Montreal and in Santiago of Chile. But I don’t think studying art defines what your work is, I think it helps you know what you don’t want it to be and where your art is in relation with others.
What are you working on at the moment?
Right now I am working on a series of postcards for the District in the UK, and on a series of types for a Swiss project. I am also developping some new paintings for a show in Vancouver in September.
