CrimeMapping.com

As issues of data transparency and smart networking shape many new businesses we wanted to meet up with a company that has created a fantastic strategy that deals with complex local challenges using user generated content

Thanks very much to Trip Albagdadi and the awesome team at CrimeMapping.com for
answering our questions

.

Who created CrimeMapping.com
CrimeMapping.com was a collaborative effort started in 2008. The Omega Group has been building both internal and public facing mapping tools since 1992. CrimeMapping.com represents the culmination of our knowledge and experience in helping law enforcement better serve the public.

What do you do and why do you do it?
CrimeMapping.com is intended to help reduce crime by keeping the public well informed with accurate and timely data. It allows anyone with access to the internet to map out recent crime activity occurring near their home, place of business or child’s school of attendance. Users can even subscribe to receive free crime alerts via e-mail.
The Omega Group is dedicated to providing solutions that empower the police and the public through technology. CrimeMapping.com accomplishes this.

Greatest achievement to date?
Although CrimeMapping.com has been featured in both the Wall Street Journal and USA Today; its greatest contribution to date has been increasing the level of transparency and trust that exists between the police and the public.

Ambitions for the future?
We want to continue to maintain the highest level of data accuracy and integrity in the industry. CrimeMapping.com will never post any information without the fully expressed permission of each agency we work with. We intend to add functionality and still maintain the simplicity of the site, which is one of its primary strengths. Future plans include more user generated content, a smart phone application and enhanced filtering functions like searching by neighborhood.

Which other social innovators do you admire?
Currently we take large amounts of tabular data and make it easily accessible through a simple interface. Facebook is an obvious choice but the majority of the content is user generated. Zillow does an excellent job of providing huge amounts of information in a simple mapping environment. We would like to see CrimeMapping.com eventually combine the successful elements of both of these sites.

Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Adaptability and flexibility are essential elements in today’s marketplace. Sometimes the end result looks nothing like your original idea. While it’s important to stay true to your convictions, it’s also important to realize when a change in direction is needed.
