What with all the politics flying around at the moment we thought wed like to grab a word with someone whos promoting people power from a different angle
When looking to speak with Cindy Gallop of If We Ran The World – heres how she was introduced to us by one of her team.. “she is terrifically yum. and i use ‘terrific’ in its full sense (extraordinarily great or intense, extremely good, and terrifying). all in great gobby good ways. enjoy”
Thanks for the chat Cindy!
.
Who created If We Ran The World?
I (Cindy Gallop) came up with the idea, and an exceptionally talented team of brilliant, quirky, deviant and quite extraordinarily sexually attractive individuals helped me shape, craft and execute it.
What do you do and why do you do it?
When I find something I feel strongly about, I do something about it.
Greatest achievement to date? Being fortunate enough to have had an idea that seems to have so powerfully captured the imagination of so many people literally all around the world. Now we have to deliver for them.
Ambitions for the future?
To turn as many good intentions as possible into action.
Which other social innovators do you admire?
Every single person who actually gets off their butt and does something to help make the world a better place.
Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Never, ever, ever let anybody else discourage you from doing what you want to do – as per whoever it was who said (Shaw, I think), ‘Those people who say it can’t be done, should get out of the way of those doing it.’ And network all you want, but know at the end of the day, the only person who can really make things happen for you is yourself.
We have a top secret wish list at Spot The Tiger
Its a list of new and inspiring – forward looking and fun companies
We thought wed start our new Big Ideas section by speaking with a group of innovators whose green ambitions are both local and global
Thank you to Tim Laurent and the team at ecycler for taking our call
.
Who created ecycler?
Ecycler was created by Craig Robertson and Timothy Laurent. Both engineering graduates from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who went on to careers in managing consulting before founding ecycler. Craig and Tim have had a long time interest in recycling and the environment and ecycler is their way to contribute (and help others to contribute) to sustainable management of natural resources.
What do you do and why do you do it?
We believe that the easiest way for individuals to make a difference in the improvement of the environment is to recycle, and our goal is to make it even easier by pairing discarders and collectors through our web site. The ecycler discarders are those who give away recyclables and the ecycler collectors are those who pick them up from a business or residence and then sell them to their local materials buyer.
For the individual (or group) collecting recyclables, ecycler provides an entrepreneurship opportunity. Ecycler is driven by these collectors who establish an ecycler recycling program in their community. Collectors can download personalized business cards and posters generated by ecycler.com and then post them in public places. Collector accounts also include a customizable ecycler profile page. Collectors can post on their personal pages the goal they are trying to achieve. For example, a recent Collector who registered posted that they are trying to earn enough for their Cub Scout to go to summer camp.
Being an ecycler discarder allows a user to be green and to support a person in their local community. The recyclables that they give away provides extra income to the collector. Ecycler further enhances the social value of recycling.
Greatest achievement to date? Launching ecycler.com in Sep 2009. Actually, it’s all the recyclables that have gone through our site that make us most happy.
Ambitions for the future?
Grow ecycler into a house-hold name. To be known worldwide as the company that offers recycling via web and entrepreneurial opportunities to those interested in recycling.
Which other social innovators do you admire?
Graham Hill | TreeHugger
Premal Shah | President of Kiva
Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
If something is not working, you have to learn to adjust quickly. First plans may work… Or, maybe it’s the second or third–especially once the business is off and running. Adaptability is the key!
